NNL16AG00P - FORMATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF CIRRUS CLOUDS IN THE TROPICAL TROPOPAUSE LAYER CIRRUS CLOUDS IN THE TROPICAL TROPOPAUSE LAYER (TTL) PLAY A KEY ROLE IN OUR CLIMATE SYSTEM IN TWO WAYS. FIRST, THEY CAUSE NET WARMING, AND SO DIRECTLY REGULATE THE TOP-OF-ATMOSPHERE ENERGY BALANCE. SECOND, CIRRUS CLOUDS IN THE TTL REGULATE STRATOSPHERIC WATER VAPOR, WHICH INFLUENCES CLIMATE AND STRATOSPHERIC CHEMICAL PROCESSES. DESPITE THE IMPORTANCE OF TTL CI TO THE CLIMATE SYSTEM, THERE ARE MANY IMPORTANT UNANSWERED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PROCESSES CONTROLLING CI FORMATION, DISTRIBUTION, AND THE IMPACT OF CI ON THE UPPER TROPOSPHERIC LOWER STRATOSPHERIC WATER AND ENERGY BUDGETS. WE WILL EVALUATE THE CALIPSO VERSION 4 LEVEL 2 STANDARD CI CLOUD EXTINCTION AND ICE WATER CONTENT PRODUCTS IN THE TTL REGION, AND WILL DEVELOP A NEW SPECIALIZED LEVEL 2 PROTOTYPE TTL CIRRUS DATA PRODUCT (S-TTL) TO CREATE A TTL CI CLIMATOLOGY. WE WILL COMPARE CALIOP S-TTL CIRRUS CLOUD PROPERTIES WITH COMPLEMENTARY OMS-LP, MODIS 1.38M, MLS AND AIRS CI DATA, TO ESTABLISH THE REPRESENTATIVENESS OF THE LIDAR DATA. WITH ENHANCED CONFIDENCE IN THE LIDAR DATA SET, WE WILL USE A TRAJECTORY/CLOUD MODEL TO EVALUATE CIRRUS CLOUD DISTRIBUTION AND FORMATION PROCESSES, AND TO VERIFY THE ACCURACY OF TTL CIRRUS PROPERTIES AS REPRESENTED IN A GLOBAL CHEMISTRY-CLIMATE MODEL. OUR PROPOSAL ADDRESSES THESE GOALS OF THE CALIPSO SCIENCE TEAM ROSES SOLICITATION 1THE DEVELOPMENT AND CHARACTERIZATION OF A CALIOP TTL CIRRUS EXTINCTION AND CLOUD ICE WATER CONTENT DATA SET AND CLIMATOLOGY THAT IS OPTIMIZED FOR THE UPPER TROPICAL TROPOSPHERE. WE WILL CALL THIS SPECIALIZED DATA SET S TTL.2 WE WILL USE THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL S-TTL CLOUD CLIMATOLOGY BUILT FROM CALIOP IN CONJUNCTION WITH MODIS 1.38, AIRS, MLS AND OMPS-LP CIRRUS CLOUD DATA, TO INFER SPATIAL CORRELATIONS BETWEEN ICE CLOUD MICROPHYSICAL AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES, AND ICE PARTICLE FORMATION MECHANISMS.3 BY STUDYING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE VERTICAL INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THE CALIOP AND OMPS-LP DATA, AND THE MAPPING CAPABILITY OF MODIS 1.38 AND AIRS, WE WILL BE ABLE TO BETTER CHARACTERIZE THE INFORMATION CONTENT OF EACH TYPE OF SENSOR FOR DATA ASSIMILATION.

NNX13AQ57G - ICE CLOUDS SUBSTANTIALLY REGULATE THE RADIATION BUDGET OF THE EARTH-ATMOSPHERE SYSTEM AND THUS PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN THE TERRESTRIAL CLIMATE. BECAUSE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE CLOUDS, THERE IS A PRESSING NEED TO RELIABLY INFER THE OPTICAL AND MICROPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THESE CLOUDS FROM SPACE OBSERVATIONS AND TO ACCURATELY SIMULATE THE RADIATIVE EFFECTS OF THESE CLOUDS WITH RADIATIVE TRANSFER MODELS. THE SINGLE-SCATTERING PROPERTIES, NAMELY, EXTINCTION EFFICIENCY, SINGLE-SCATTERING ALBEDO AND PHASE FUNCTION, OF NONSPHERICAL ICE CRYSTALS ARE FUNDAMENTAL TO REMOTE SENSING IMPLEMENTATIONS AND RADIATIVE TRANSFER SIMULATIONS INVOLVING ICE CLOUDS. VARIOUS STUDIES OF ICE CLOUD OPTICAL PROPERTIES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS TO REMOTE SENSING AND MODELING OF ICE CLOUDS HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN THE LITERATURE. HOWEVER, MANY OPEN QUESTIONS STILL REMAIN, REFLECTING SIGNIFICANT UNCERTAINTIES IN THE CURRENT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ICE CLOUD RADIATIVE PROPERTIES. FOR EXAMPLE, ALTHOUGH NONSPHERICAL ICE PARTICLE SHAPE MODELS HAVE BEEN USED (TAKANO AND LIOU 1989; FU AND LIOU 1993; HONG ET AL. 2009), NO CONSENSUS HAS BEEN REACHED AS TO WHICH MODEL IS THE MOST APPROPRIATE CHOICE FOR MODELING AND REMOTE SENSING APPLICATIONS. ANOTHER KEY PROBLEM IS THAT NONE OF THE CURRENT ICE CLOUD PARTICLE MODELS CONSIDER ICE SURFACE ROUGHNESS FEATURES REVEALED BY OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES (CROSS 1969; ONO 1969; ULANOWSKI ET AL. 2006, 2012). FURTHERMORE, THE DEPENDENCE OF ICE CLOUD OPTICAL PROPERTIES ON ICE CLOUD TEMPERATURE NEEDS TO BE QUANTIFIED. THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THIS PROPOSED PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP STATE-OF-THE-ART OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF ICE CLOUDS FOR APPLICATIONS TO REMOTE SENSING AND RADIATIVE TRANSFER SIMULATION UNDER ICE CLOUDY CONDITIONS. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES ARE TO 1) DEVELOP AN ICE CLOUD MICROPHYSICAL MODEL IN TERMS OF THE PARTICLE SIZE AND HABIT DISTRIBUTIONS, WHICH WILL BE CONSTRAINED BY IN SITU OBSERVATIONS; 2) GENERATE THE BULK OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF ICE CLOUDS BASED ON THE AFOREMENTIONED ICE CLOUD MODEL AT SPECTRAL BANDS INVOLVED IN THE CERES-MODIS ALGORITHM FOR RETRIEVING ICE CLOUD PROPERTIES (MINNIS ET AL. 2011); AND 3) DEVELOP A NEW AND CONSISTENT (NAMELY, CONSISTENT WITH THE OPTICAL PROPERTIES USED IN REMOTE SENSING EFFORT IN OBJECTIVE 2) BROADBAND PARAMETERIZATION OF THE ICE CLOUD RADIATIVE PROPERTIES FOR APPLICATION TO THE THE RADIATIVE TRANSFER MODEL USED BY THE CERES SCIENCE TEAM; AND 4) DELIVER THE DATASETS AND THE RELEVANT DOCUMENTATION TO NASA. THIS EFFORT INCLUDES THE INCORPORATION OF THE NEW PARAMETERIZATION INTO THE AFOREMENTIONED RADIATIVE TRANSFER MODEL.

NNX13AN35G - THE UW HIGH SPECTRAL RESOLUTION LIDAR (HSRL) LIDAR PROGRAM HAS DEPLOYED TWO HSRL SYSTEMS IN SUPPORT OF THE SEACARS CAMPAIGN WITH ONE SYSTEM OPERATING IN SINGAPORE AND THE SECOND WHICH WAS RECENTLY DEPLOYED IN HUNTSVILLE, AL. THE SYSTEMS OPERATE CONTINUOUSLY WITH ALMOST A FULL YEAR OF OBSERVATIONS IN SINGAPORE AND OVER A MONTH IN AL. THE HSRL PROVIDES THE SEACARS FIELD CAMPAIGN A TRULY NEW CAPABILITY THAT WILL PROVE VALUABLE BOTH DURING THE EXPERIMENT FOR SCIENCE AND FIGHT PLANNING AND POST DEPLOYMENT FOR AEROSOL AND CLOUD RESEARCH. THE SYSTEMS WILL ALSO PROVIDE THE CALIOP ALGORITHM DEVELOP TEAM A VALUABLE SOURCE OF VALIDATION FOR THE CALIOP AEROSOL AND CLOUD EXTINCTION RETRIEVALS. UNLIKE A SINGLE CHANNEL LIDAR SUCH AS THE MPL, THE HSRL IS UNIQUE IN THAT IT IS CAPABLE OF SEPARATING THE MOLECULAR AND PARTICULATE (CLOUD AND AEROSOL) SCATTERING. THIS CAPABILITY PROVIDES DIRECT MEASUREMENTS OF THE VERTICALLY RESOLVED RADIATIVE PROPERTIES OF CLOUD AND AEROSOLS INCLUDING DEPOLARIZATION, EXTINCTION, LIDAR RATIO, AND BACKSCATTER CROSS-SECTION. THE HSRL ALSO PROVIDES SENSITIVITY TO VERY LOW OPTICAL DEPTH (OD<0.1) AEROSOL LAYERS HAVING SIGNALS SMALLER THEN THE MOLECULAR RETURN. AN EXAMPLE OF THE HSRL BACKSCATTER CROSS-SECTION MEASUREMENTS FOR DATA COLLOCATED IN HUNTSVILLE AL IS PRESENTED IN THE TOP OF FIGURE 1. THE ADVANTAGES OF THE HSRL TECHNIQUE IS HIGHLIGHTED BY COMPARING THE CALIBRATED (HSRL) PARTICULATE BACKSCATTER CROSS-SECTION IMAGE (TOP IMAGE FIGURE 1) WITH ATTENUATED BACKSCATTER IMAGE (BOTTOM IMAGE FIGURE 1). THE BOTTOM IMAGE IS GENERATED USING THE HSRL COMBINED CHANNEL WITHOUT SEPARATING THE MOLECULAR AND PARTICLE BACKSCATTER AND IS REPRESENTATIVE OF WHAT A SINGLE CHANNEL LIDAR WOULD MEASURE SUCH AS AN MPL. THE HSRL SYSTEMS ARE VERY ROBUST HOWEVER SIGNIFICANT WORK REMAINS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE POST PROCESSING CALIBRATION AND QUALITY ASSURANCE WHICH IS THE FOCUS OF THIS PROPOSAL. THIS EFFORT WILL RESULT IN HSRL DATA PRODUCTS PRODUCED FOR FIXED TEMPORAL AND VERTICAL SCALES WITH QA FLAGS THAT INDICATE THE QUALITY AND USEFULNESS OF THE HSRL DATA SUCH AS PROFILES OF PARTICULATE BACKSCATTER CROSS SECTION, EXTINCTION, AND PARTICULATE LINEAR DEPOLARIZATION. THE DATA AND USERS GUIDE WILL BE PROVIDED TO THE NASA COMMUNITY THROUGH BOTH FTP AND THE HSRL SEARCH AND ORDER INTERFACE (HSRL.SSEC.WISC.EDU).
